texans in summer: fuck this place

Meanwhile, we get a heat advisory for a high of 90° :

Whew....not quite that hot here

And Austin shuts down when the temps go below 32. It’s all relative.
I had a discussion about weather on Oppo once, and I think it was CalzoneGolem who put it in perspective. He said that people in the north don’t know how to keep warm, they learn to tolerate being cold. It’s the same here, but on the other end of the thermometer. Still, I always felt that it was easier to put clothes on to stay warm than it is to take them off to keep cool.

This summer has pretty much been perfect weather.

I did drive to a doctor’s appointment in the snow in Austin once. I got there just fine, but I saw a half a dozen or so crashe s on Ben White on the relatively short drive, and yeah, then it turns out that all appointments were cancelled.

I think I’ve said that before about your forecasts. I can’t take off enough clothes to be comfortable at those temps, especially in the sun. Yet, I can be comfortable at around zero here, so long as I am moving. I have many winter clothings. MANY.

Now I have to figure out what that is in USD.
33 = 92. Not too bad. I’ll take it. Is that warm for your part of the world?
I’ve actually got a hare brained system for converting C to F.
1) Double the C number (33 x 2 = 66)
2) Subtract the number of tens (66 has six tens, so 66 - 6 = 60)
3) Add 32 (60 + 32 = 92)
The math works out to 1º one way or the other, which is insignificant. It works in reverse, too.

Also, I get a break from the spiders and snakes and all that business. Totally worth it.

That’s hot.

Rain at Spa? Park it. Snow in Austin? Park it.
It’s actually more common for us to get ice than snow, but we haven’t have a proper ice storm in a while.

yeah 90s are rare here
tho..less so every year
suspect soon enough ill be saying 100s are rare here

Too cold for my blood. That’s what the rest of the year is for. Give me heat in August or what’s the point?

[Sarah Palin bug-eyes and inflection] You can KEEP the heat!
Other than the heating bill, I don't mind the cold. I have zero tolerance for heat.

This summer we are also having summer. I am not a fan. It’s currently 87 with 69% humidity. Which, if I’m honest, feels a bit like soup.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:15 |

Is that somehow less work than C(9/5)+32?
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:16 |

I do n’t drop the windshield until it’s going to be over 85 for a while. I’ve been pretty unhappy this summer. Heck, it was 50 late last week.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:32 |

Not as hot as AZ, but definitely more humidity. Still, not as miserable as it would be in Houston were the humidity is like 3,000.

Nights are so nice and cool there. Here, it’s still 80 degrees at 4 am.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:34 |

Humidity here right now is 58%. Quite bearable.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:35 |

It is when you’re doing it in your head. 9/5 is almost 2, which is why you subtract the tens. It’s really just one more step.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:36 |

33 deg? That’s horrible. It’s about 23 here and that’s more than enough for me.

At the full heat of the day what will it be? Ours generally drops as the temp rises.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:39 |

its a bit deceptive as that lowest temp is around 5 am...but yeah...cool by comparison for sure
tho...tbh...our current night time temperatures are normally comfy t shirt n shorts daytime temperatures for me
![]() 08/10/2020 at 11:42 |

It will drop over the course of the day.

This is one of many reasons I won’t live in Texas.
It’s been 10-15 degrees cooler than normal the last week here which is nice.but the heat is back today with a high of 95 and 70% humidity.

I didn’t pick Texas, Texas picked me (well, Rice University picked me, and offered to pay my tuition, so.....). Aside from the weather, Texas has been pretty good to me.

That’s a pretty good reason to end up there

Certainly wasn’t my first choice, but it all worked out well. Probably better than my first choice would have.

After you posted 123 Degrees earlier, I am today unimpressed.

And there ya’ have it. California picked me, but now I choose California, and proudly.

Man if this pandemic would calm down or more appropriately people would actually take it seriously then I’d be there with you.
I keep wishfully browsing rental listings out there and have been prepping my house to sell.
Rental homes out in the fringe of the bay area like Vallejo are starting to get temptingly cheap to make us just say F it and move while working remote.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 13:24 |

Over here, the temps aren’t as high, but the humidity will be bad.
This is th e time of the year dominated by afternoon thunderstorms.

Let me simply say, I love the Bay Area. The traffic sucks, the overcrowding sucks, the liberal politics are annoying, but I don't want to live anywhere else right now.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 14:41 |

We could use some rain in a big way. We’re in that typical pattern where high pressure parks over TX and any rain from the north or west just flows around us.

Most I know that live there other than complaining about the cost love it too.
With the economy being what it is right now companies aren’t wanting to pay to relocate anyone so the thought right now is we move this fall while the rental market is still depressed and working remote for my current employer. Then in a few months find something locally.
